Harz. 2. Brocken, Wurmberg

Brocken steam train / Brocken Bahn

Harz is a wooded mountain massif, the highest in northern Germany. The origin of the name is connected with the Old German word meaning “wooded mountains”. Which is quite correct – the mountains are very wooded, covered mainly with firry forests. True, the forests have suffered greatly over the past five years. But foresters are hoping for self-recovery.

In this part about Brocken and the steam railway, as well as about the neighboring mountain Wurmberg.

Brittany. 1. Ille et Villaine. Saint Malo

Saint Malo region

Brittany (Bretagne) on the maps seemed somehow quite easily “explorable”, especially since the first time we decided to take a car, remembering from previous trips that traveling in France without a car creates some, in some places significant, problems. In reality, the region turned out to be huge and interesting. However, the vast distances make it impossible to explore Brittany in any detail in a week.

You have to choose what is characteristic of Brittany and drive a lot, or explore one small piece, hoping to see other parts next time.

Cividale old town and Lombard temple

Lombard Temple / Tempietto longobardo / Cividale langobarden Tempel

The small town of Cividale del Friuli is located east of the relatively large city of Udine, almost at the very border with Slovenia. Our favorite size – the effortless half-day hike. Time in the Cividale old town stopped somewhere in the Middle Ages, and once it was large and significant, the capital of the duchy, a fortified city founded by Julius Caesar himself (Forum Julius = Friuli) on the site of a Celtic settlement.

Mont Saint Michel Abbey

Mont Saint Michel abbey

According to legend, the St. Archangel Michael appeared to bishop Ober in a dream and ordered to build a church here. And that was done: in the 8th century a chapel appeared on the rock. However, the Archangel Michael is unlikely to have anything to do with the transformation of the chapel into a fortress, which we see today. The place was strategically and economically profitable, and the abbots were smart enough to use it. But the main merit, of course, belongs to those architects from the 11-16 centuries who managed to unit the man-made and nature so poetically.

Writers and not only they admired Mont-Saint-Michel, called it the eighth wonder of the world. At number one, it entered the UNESCO list.

Torre Pedrera Rimini

Torre Pedrera Rimini

In general, Rimini is not as nightmare as it is sometimes written, but also not ideal for beach holiday. For a quiet lying on the beach in the form of a vegetable, it is better to choose another city. But for those who want to combine excursions, entertainment and swimming, this is a good, convenient place. If we say about Rimini, one should also not forget about the safety rules – this is not the quietest and safest place in Italy, you should not be too relax.

This part is about everything except the sights: roads, transport, the Torre Pedrera map, beaches, including a great wild beach towards Ravenna.
