After visiting the old town with its fortified walls, Büdingen, we move a few kilometers and see the Ronneburg castle, and then take a short look at Gelnhausen.

Ronneburg Castle
Ronneburg is also a former property of the Isenburg-Büdingen, which they had to sell to a relative.
In fact, the castle ceased to serve as a home for the collateral line of counts in the 17th century, when it burned and was plundered during the Thirty Years’ War. Religious refugees, persecuted Jews and Gypsies, and representatives of other groups not welcomed by society lived there. At the same time, local residents dismantled the crumbling buildings for building materials.

Nevertheless, the castle has managed to survive to this day in very good condition. A significant part of the buildings from the 14th-16th centuries has remained intact. Of course, there are practically no interiors, but the kitchen, some furniture and even paintings in places have been well preserved.
As an additional entertainment, there are birds of prey.
Every self-respecting castle must have a well. This one is very deep.

Gelnhausen
The city was founded by Friedrich Barbarossa. At the same time, a palatinate (a travel palace and meeting place) was founded here, which was important in the 12th century and the ruins of which can be seen. In the 14th century, the city was no longer interesting to the Kaisers, and they began to transfer it from one neighboring possession to another.
The city centre is also very historical – and very lively, unlike Büdingen. It is located on a very steep slope.

The oldest house in Hesse

We didn’t get to the palatinate, as there was also adventure golf on the agenda. Actually, only ruins remained there – the palace burned down during the Thirty Years’ War. And the golf, by the way, is good. This is the first place we visited where they thought to offer sunscreen to visitors. The golf is located halfway to the next town to the east (2.5 km from the center).
