Last Updated on 26/02/2023

We continue to move clockwise around Lake Lucerne. This part will focus on Klewenalp (part of the shore from Seelisberg to Bürgenstock), Bürgenstock and Stans.

The villages of Beckenried, Emmetten, Buochs belong to Klewenalp.

How to get

Klewenalp. There is a pier in Beckenried (all regular ships stop) and Buochs (boats do not always stop). There is also a car ferry Gersau – Beckenried (the only one on the lake).
Nearest train station in Stans. The bus goes there. The bus runs also through the tunnel to Flüelen.

Bürgenstock. Funicular from Kehrsiten pier below or bus from Stansstaad.

Stans. Train from Lucerne. Boats to Stansstad (stop not always).

Klewenalp

Beckenried and Buochs is an inhabited zone between the lake and the Autobahn from Lucerne to Saint Gotthard. Emmetten is located off the coast and on a hill.

Klewenalp advertises itself as a family trekking destination. You can take the cable car from Beckenried (next to the pier) to an altitude of 1600 meters, from there walk to Stockhütte and go down to Emmentten. This variant of the walk seemed to us the least interesting in comparison with others in the region, so we did not go there.

Bürgenstock

Bürgenstock is a peninsula that cuts deep into the lake. It has been a resort since 1872, and now it is a luxury hotel complex (4-5 stars) with swimming pools, courts and other thalassotherapy. In the summer months, you can go upstairs using a funicular, built back in 1888.

Fans of joining the world of stars can stay in hotels where various Kennedys, kings of Denmark and other famous people stayed at one time, look at the church in which Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn were married.

And those who like walking can take a walk along the Felsenweg trail cut in the rocks up to the highest elevator in Europe, which rises to the top of Hammetschwand. Besides the observation deck, there is a restaurant upstairs.

At the foot of the Bürgenstock.

The elevator is visible at the very top (pillar and bridge).

Stans

Stans is the oldest settlement in the canton of Nidwalden and its capital, although it is actually a small town. The historical part of the town is represented by Schmiedgasse street.

The main attraction is the funicular and cable car to Mount Stanserhorn, which offers beautiful views of the mountain peaks, including the Jungfrau, and the lakes of Central Switzerland. Besides the views, there is a revolving restaurant and a small population of marmots. In May 2012, a new cable car was opened – a two-story trailer with an open area on the second floor.

You can see also a monument to a legendary warrior from Stans Arnold, who rushed at the Battle of Sempach to the peaks of the Habsburg troops, which led to the victory of the Swiss.

In the monastery of St. Clara, built in the 17th century, the famous Swiss teacher Heinrich Pestalozzi opened his first school, where he gathered orphans who lost their parents during the war with the French.

Next – Pilatus. All sights of the region are on the map.
