Meersburg is the most beautiful town on Lake Constance, although some might prefer Lindau. Plan at least half a day for Meersburg Castle and the town’s picturesque streets.

Meersburg attractions

Meersburg is located on a steep hillside. The lower part of the historic center is connected with the upper one by a narrow street and stairs. An old castle rises above the cliff.

It is believed that the castle was built by the Merovingian king Dagobert 1 in the 7th century. But the history of the city, recorded in written sources, begins in the 13th century, when it submitted to the bishop of Konstanz. However after the construction of the castle, Meersburg was not noted for anything special in history.

Meersburg Castle

Meersburg Castle (Burg, Altes Schloss) – the oldest inhabited castle in Germany. Inside you will see medieval rooms, cellars, as well as the rooms where the most known German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff stayed.

After waiting 15-30 minutes of the excursion, you can get up to the tower. The excursion is short – there are very few exhibits in the castle.

There are not many interiors, only a few rooms. The castle the castle forbids publishing the photos.

The upper town is especially picturesque – the bright colors of the houses are mixed with greenery.

The city also has the New Palace (Neues Schloss). This baroque building was built in the 18th century by the bishops-princes of Konstanz as their residence. The palace hosts temporary exhibitions, as well as a municipal gallery, which displays paintings of the local area. On the second floor – the restored chambers of the bishops-princes of Konstanz.

From the terrace of the palace there is a magnificent view of the lake and the lower city.

View towards Konstanz.

View towards Switzerland. In clear weather, snowy peaks are visible.

Lake Constance has a unique climate – palm trees and figs grow calmly here. Of course, there are plenty of vineyards here. And since there are vineyards, there are wineries too. One such is located in Meersburg.

In the lower town, a pier, a ferry and a thermal pool.

Pleasure boats leave from Meersburg to all destinations. If you want to save money on your trip to Konstanz, take the ferry there. The price is much lower, runs much more often and around the clock. From the ferry stop, you can get to the center of Konstanz by bus (No. 1), and to Thermes – by bus (No. 1, then No. 5) or on foot along the coast (walk about 30-40 minutes).

it is impossible not to mention the Therme. These are warm pools, saunas, massage with water jets – great fun, especially on a rainy day. There are three such complexes in the vicinity: in Meersburg, Konstanz and Überlingen. We liked the latter the most – fewer people and more modern. But the Baths in Meersburg and Konstanz are also worth a visit.

All sights around the city are listed on the attractions map.

Hagnau

Hagnau is a picturesque village almost in the middle of the German coast, half an hour’s walk from Meersburg. It consists almost entirely of hotels, guest houses and villas.

From the point of view of sights, it is completely uninteresting. Although it is mentioned in documents from the 12th century thanks to the monastery. The oldest buildings have survived from the monastery – the 16th century.

Several streets, pretty houses in flowers, a town hall, a church, a well-equipped beach, a winery and vineyards, a yacht parking – that is, in fact, the whole village. However, it is convenient because, on the one hand, it is within walking distance from Meersburg. On the other hand, it is not as crowded with vacationers as other cities. Although here the road along the coast is packed with people and bicycles.

If you choose Hagnau as your temporary residence, we recommend taking a walk among the vineyards. For example, go up: a wonderful view of the lake opens from the hill.
